Borland has a good free one.

And there is also Dev-C++.

There is also a previous thread on the subject.

Visual C++ is perhaps the best thing microsoft has ever made. It's the only MS product I will defend. But it is a tad pricy. But you DO actually get what you pay for, and that's saying so much for an MS product. Dev-C++ is great but buggy and the uninstaller never worked for me. It comes wih MingW32 which is an awesome compiler. Borland is pretty nice but a decent IDE like Hatch is helpful.

I have the Microsoft's Visual C++6.0 professional edition, and it has worked great for me when I was taking programming classes. You can find it on campus bookstore reasonably priced. They have an academic price which is for colleges and such!

BTW, the compiler I recommended in the thread DrZ referred is Borland, very inexpensive, and *does* include an IDE. I use it myself.

When I purchased Microsoft Visual C++ it cost $100.00 for the standard version and came with a $45.00 rebate inside. Look for the Academic Pricing at a local School/college it was selling for about $45.00 or so.
