if you have never done any programming, i wouldnt suggest starting with python. depending on what you want to do, whether it be more web-based or not, i would start with VB or java. VB is a good language to start with, it is pretty simple and will let you know if you have a thing for programming or not. or if you want to start out somwhat advanced, go with c/c++.

Well, I had read a wee thing that a guy had wrote on programming, and he said that VB is a very badly laid out language and the fact that it isn't easily transported to other platforms other than Windows is not that good for a first language. He recommended Python because it was well laid out and simple??

I started diddling with python, gave up. Fiddled around with VB gave up. Found Liberty basic, love it, going to gain some confidence and move on to C/C++ and hopefully C#.
The best part of Liberty basic I would say is the support from there Website. have a gander here: http://www.libertybasic.com/ After a couple of days you may find yourself writing WIN 32 applications, oh what fun! |

Hi MSIuser,
I would avoid starting with VB, it teaches bad programming habits and you don't learn the basics, plus you have to pay for the compiler. I suggest starting with either Java or C++. Python, Perl, and the rest are good, but they're not as popular as Java/C++ so you might not find as much info. |

Oh and if I were you I would start collecting free compilers as they seem to be dissapearing as of late. You can always delete them later if ya need the space.

I agree with DrZ, VB isn't good, avoid it, try learning C++ or Java, I recommend Java because it's easier, but you can start with C++ too.

Hi Sunday Silence,
Liberty Basic is based on the old BASIC language, which is the predecessor of Visual Basic. Almost no programs are written in BASIC anymore since its, well, too basic, so I suggest you begin with Java or C++. |
