Can you recommend a good book on game/software design?

I work in graphic and product design and come from an art/design background.

I am interested in how software is designed, prior to the actual programming, and how it is project managed.

The design and project management process for graphic design/print and product design is very well documented, even to the extent of 'biographies' of companies such as Ford, or Chesterfields. What would be the equivalent for software design and production.

This is a general question regarding software in general and I would be interested in any informed recommendations.

I would also be interested to know of any good books on the conception/design/production of computer games (again, prior to actual programming).

I realise this is a programming forum so I'm sorry if this note seems inappropriate..

Thankyou, in advance.

I've started learning games programming sometime ago, I recommend you to visit GameDev, it's a great site for beginning, hopefully the "for beginners" page will answer your questions.

Thanks for the suggestion

Agreed.

That was exactly the sort of thing I was looking for, as a site itself it is immensely informative.. and then there's the links.

Thanks for your suggestion aym_7.
