asp.net and db connection help

OK,
so I have been reading my asp.net for dummies book for almost 4 weeks on and off. I have been through a bunch of it, getting the basic "form" of what is what.
I skipped alot of the fluff, like coloring labels, and junk like that.
ANyway, the reason I started learning this was for some web projects. I have an inventory database I want to connect to and display. I have tried all the examples in the book, but crapola, I can't get anything to work right.

If someone can help me out here. I really need to look at some code that "works" instead of trying to make mine work from the books examples that make you "add your own". It's a pain to try and do that with NO example of "exactly" what the syntax is supposed to be like. That's one thing that sux about this book, the ado db part is very sketchy, no straight forward example of this.
thx
