Where to start out?
Hi, my name is Chris and I am 16. I am very interested in programming and really want to get started this summer. I would like to learn C++, I have a version of it on my computer. But I also have Visual Basic available to learn at my school, but no teachers just books and your own time, so I would rather learn C++. I consider myself pretty smart and a quick learner and also a hardcore gamer. I know a bit about 3D graphic design, I have been working on SoftImage XSI for 7 months now, but have always been more interested in programming than graphic design. What is the best book to start off with, or any other methods? Thank you for any help, and any advice you can give me on learning C++.

Get a good book, like SAM's teach yourself C++ in 24 hours, or something similar. Barnes and Noble has a ton of those type books, if U have the compiler on your PC then you already have the expensive part, so just get a teach yourself book and go thru it step by step and U should be good to go...

Starting out with C++ by Tony Gaddis, or
How to program C++ by Dietel & Dietel are very good books, kind of pricey, but well worth the money. |

I just went to Half Price Books and bought some books on C++. When they are as cheap as they are there, you can afford to buy more and not worry as much about the quality. Those books, plus online tutorials, were very useful.

If you are going to program, you need a PC. You can read and get some information, but for it to stick you have to sit down and code, run, fix your bugs, repeat.
