Question Java on .NET ?

Good Morning,
I want to learn Java. I finished a C++ class a couple of months ago and want to go on to Object Oriented Programming. I can get the Microsoft Sudio .NET program for less than $100 (Student Version). Should I get this and have Java along with many other programming laguages, or should I get somthing else that is not tied to the .NET framework? I like to play with Linux, so I hate to be locked into Microsoft if I can avoid it, but I also want to learn something that may be of value to my employment...

If you've got experience of C++ then C# which is avaialble to the .NET framework ain't far off this - the syntax will be familar at least. If you learn Java as well you have the main two branches covered so you're not "locked in" as you say.

Buying Visual Studio.NET isn't going to help you learn Java at all, because Java is not an M$ product. Download the Java SDK and an IDE like NetBeans and you are set to start learning.
