How long will it take?
I bought a book that teaches newbies to c++. How long do you think it will take to learn it self taught with no prior programming experience, at all.

thats a question that can not be answered... after all we dont know what kind of person you are. Are you dedicated, will you start off then get bored and forget about it.
This is a question that only you can answer. |

its all relative. Think of it as taking a class. In college for example, most programmers have to go through atleast 5 or 6 courses of programming. At the end of the last class you are almost ready to be a professional programmer. At the end of the first you barely know how to do anything. As long as you r dedicated, I would say it would take about 8 months.

HTML, yes but I never thought it was considered programming.
I'm usually a person who enjoys learning interesting things. And so far it has seemed pretty interesting. I'm trying to learn some basic programming to see if I would enjoy it as a career. I enjoy working with computers so I thought it might be something I would explore. |

html yes is the first step to programming. If you want to learn and have the desire to learn 6 months. If you arn't going to read 2 hours a day practice 1 hour a day. Well than maybe 8-12 months

Forget about HTML, if you intend to do any serious programming (C++, C, Java, etc.).
Ive found that knowing HTML is pretty useless when it come to learning programming, unless you intend to do something web related that would require you to have some knowledge of HTML. As for time, It took me about 5 months to learn Visual Basic, and about 2 months to learn COBOL. The nice thing about programming languages is that much like spoken languages, there is always something to learn... Always a new advanced topic that you can get a book on and study. Good Luck. |

I hope GreenBMP doesn't mind us borrowing his post, but anyway...
If I were you, I wouldn't start with C#. You aren't going to find a cheap version of it anywhere. Ebay is your best bet. There are only two versions of it, Visual c#.net 2002, and 2003. If you are set on it, keep checking Ebay for a cheap one, or just suck it up, and buy it at full retail price. As for books take a look at some of the stuff Sams Publishing publishes. I do believe they have an entire series devoted to C#. If you want to star programming with one of the C languages, (C, C++, C#) I would start with C++, as there are plenty of books, and you can download free compilers online. Check out www.downloads.com for the free compilers, and other programming goodies. As for books, Again Sams Publishing publishes a bunch of books on C++, from beginners stuff, to advanced stuff. |
