Hi guys - I want to start learning Java so I thought the best and quickest way to start was to ask you about it.

What software do I need to develop with Java (I would prefer to stay away from visual environments).

Where can I learn it online (from the ground up)?

Thanks in advance

Well, I took a course in Java. The software that I used from this site http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.2/
you can go there and download it. Then read the instructions how you can use to compile your source codes.
You can use notepad to write your source coded and use dos to compile and run.
