Which is a good programming software to study, and that pays good money. I live in NYC which one is in good demand and almost guaranteed a job.

tough one

C++ is a widely used one, but i have no idea about how in demand it is, as its quite a common one people use.

Getting a grip on Web languages is always useful, ASP, PHP, Java, Javascript, SQL etc

you could always try COBOL lol !!!

C++ is a very useful one to learn. If I were you I would start off with Basic if you are totally new to programming then I would go to C++. After I learned C++ I was able to learn other languages fairly easily. That is IMO though.

you laugh, but i was shocked by how many corporate systems still run cobol junk. once the dinosaurs leave, finding a cobol job would not be easy, but i would think a cobol programmer would be paid very well to maintain that older code.

i suggest you forget learning a language and learn a software package. get into html, php, and the ilk. learn dreamweaver, flash, etc. it takes a good while to learn a language in order to be hired for it, but learning a software package is easy and almost anyone can do it.

besides, there is more demand for all that flashy crap on the internet than there is for real system code.

Thats right. In my area all the big firms need cobol programmers all the time. Obviously you should learn c++ or java too, but knowing cobol would be a good way to get your foot in the career door!

HTML and C++ are entirely different things. Saying you shouldn't learn C++, but learn HTML and PHP instead doesn't make any sense.

If you want to learn programming, then learn programming. HTML is not programming. Dreamweaver is not programming. C++, Java, C#, VB, Cobol, these are programming. And I think there is as much demand for programmers as there is for web stuff.

It comes down to what you want to do. Do you want to design web pages? Learn HTML. Do you want to write programs that actually serve up the web pages? Learn C++.

i think it is much better to learn a software package. no real web designer codes html by hand (except for tweaks) and there is nothing to be learned from html in the long run. you cannot learn C or C++ by yourself. GOOD programming is hard. you can learn syntax by yourself, but you will never code anything worth using.

i emphasize: learn a software package. dreamweaver, flash, maya, photoshop, whatever. believe me, you will save yourself so much time and agony and, i believe, you will have a much easier job finding a job if you specialize in a software package than if you try to market yourself as a programmer.

note: VB is not programming
