Web page design help for newbie

I want to utilize the personal web space that Cox has provided but I'm a complete newbie at web design. All I want to do right now is upload pictures into folders (car pictures under car, house under house, etc...) then show those folders on the main page. That way when my family or whoever visits the site they just click on the folder and up pops a list of contents or even better thumbnails. I've seen this done but I can't find a page to use as an example. I have downloaded HTML-Kit but can't figure out how to do this simple task.

I would appreciate any help.
