Re: Forum?

I'd suggest using this . It is a good board and fairly easy to modify.

http://www.invisionboard.com/download/index.php thats the download link for invision power board, you want to select V 1.3. theres another one called phpbb http://www.phpbb.com/ and there the main 2 free ones, unless you want to go down the paid route where vbulletin would be the best. but theres nothing wrong with IPB and PHPBB

I recommend phpBB too, it's free, and has all of the features you can expect from a forum system.

The main differences that I have seen between PHPBB and Invision Board are:
  • PHPBB is a more popular with a larger collection of hacks and templates.
  • PHPBB works on a wider variety of platforms and databases.
  • PHPBB stores most of it's templates in files, unlike Invision Board that stores most of it's templates in a database.

Thanks for the help finding a forum, I downloaded both, although I have not been able to actually install one yet. I am really a n00b when it comes to ftp and stuff like this, I really have no idea what chmod means or how to set it up. I'm using a free account on geocities, can i still use this?

I know phpBB requires an SQL database and I'm pretty sure Invision would as well. I really doubt that Geocities offers this for its websites. There are a lot of really good web hosts out there that don't cost much, like $4/month. There have been a couple recent threads discussing them. One of the most popular of them was Total Choice Hosting which is very affordable but good quality.

Whatever one you choose needs to support SQL in one of the forms that phpBB or Invision supports, and PHP. Almost all hosting providers offer these but you should still check.
