divide overflow

i suspect that this has nothing to do with microsoft software. i get this message when booting with hard drive (Win ME) and also when booting with a custom ME bootdisk. Error says your program caused a divide overflow error.
No program is running yet so I don't understand.
I removed a 256 stick and put in a 64 stick to see if that would fix it. nope.
i checked the processor speed in bios and it matches the text at bootup, Pentium 500 cele.
what could be the problem here?

One thing that can cause it, is a screwed up date/time in the bios.

Check and confirm.

Did galaxian's tip get you going again?

If not, you can also grab a manual for the motherboard and check the other bios settings (or, for a quick try, use "Save Defaults" - but remember to disable any devices that you aren't using - and exit).

Memory can cause that error - you could also try yet another module (might be a finicky board)

As Gary suggested, memory can cause issues download memtest86 from www.memtest86.com, put a blank formatted disk in your floppy drive. Extract the zip file and run install.bat When done, reboot from the floppy and memtest should start. If it does at least 2 passes OK then that will probably eliminate the memory as the problem
