yes Windows will try to install the drivers everytime you boot up if you uninstall them and then cancel the new hardware detection driver install process each time you boot up. The thing to do if what you are trying to is to disable your usb ports if you are not using them anyways is to go into the setup BIOS right at startup of the PC and disable them in there, then windows will not even see them then, and will thus not keep trying to reinstall the drivers. You can always reenable them if you need them..

If your just trying to redetect the ports, just go into device manager and delete them from the list, windows will see them again on startup and try to renstall the drivers.

OK here is what I was trying to do.
I pluged in a external USB burner and win/98 recognized it as a USB device and wanted to install it. As it turned out I had the wrong drivers and canceled the install. Now I have the right drivers but windows Will not bring up the USB install box again. Also in the install new hardware it cannot see it. I did reinstall the USB and did a reboot but windows still cannot see it. |

Disconnect the USB device, remove the USB drivers and any USB devices listed in device manager, reboot without them connected. Then once windows has detected the USB controller shut down, reconnect your devices and start-up It should now re-detect everything connected to the USB ports

Hey, don't feel too bad about it, these things are sent to try us.
Anyway, you could go into devices and delete the USB root hub from the list. Might be worth a try. Otherwise, check down the list to make sure it has'nt been falsely detected (as something else, it happens, my camera gets listed as a drive under device manager on 98). It may be detected as just a plain CD drive. |

Designer ---Solved the mystery !!!! The connection on the back of the LiteOn external CD burner was bad. After trying to install it on w/98--win/2000---win/xp. It finaly hit my pea brain that it had to be the product. I had a clue when win/200o gave me a USB install window when I messed with the serial to USB connection. I cant seem to fix it so RMA time.
