Win 95 Blank Screen?

Hi all,

This a first for me so if I sound a little dumb bear with me, I'll learn the ropes soon.

I have an ancient Toshiba Satellite 110CS Laptop P100 16mb ram, 800mb hdd with Win 95. Now the problem started when I left the thing on too long and the desktop disappeared and was replaced by a blank screen with a cursor at the top. I can only seem to turn the thing off by randomly pressing the Fn key and one of the other function keys. I do believe it is not possible to recover it but if there is a way, does anyone have a clue?

Thanks.

Ian

When you say a cursor appears at the top of the screen it's not like "C:\" with a flashing cursor is it. If so you're in MS-DOS. Otherwise it might be worth doing an over-the-top install of 95, or even better upgrade to 98SE it runs a hell of a lot better than 95 (less buggy).

No, it's definitely not Dos because nothing happens when you type. I don't actually know how I would do an over-the-top reinstall because no matter what I touch it just doesn't respond. Is there any kind of key command to force it to reboot or to get into dos?

It seems to have fixed itself. I charged the battery (which doesn't really hold much because of its age) and booted it up tonight and it worked! So if anyone knows where I could get a copy of Windows 98se for cheap and a cheap external CD drive I'll replace Windows 95.

cheers,

Ian

You can get 98SE from:

http://www.autdirect.co.uk/acatalog/

Tried Ebuyer as they're normally the cheapest but they appear to have discontinued it.

External CD rom drives at AUT, they start at about £40.

Hope this helps

. . . your current Toshiba is memory and hard-drive limited for Win98. It'd need 32-to-64mb ram, and perhaps a boost at least up to the 2gb range for the hard drive. Those parts would be prohibitively expensive if found anywhere new... so the used approach is indeed the way to go [you might find an entire used laptop cheaper than finding the replacement memory & hard drive for the Satellite]

Win95, on the other hand, can run on 16mb of memory just fine.
