WIN98 versus WIN 98Se
What are the differences between the two WIN 98 versions?
I'm asking because I have win98 & have purchased a dvd rewriter that requires win 98Se or higher, will it make any/much difference? |

There aren't a lot of differences between 98 original and 98 2nd Edition, but there are enough to make a difference for certain hardware and programs.
If you can find the 98 original-to-2nd-edition upgrade disk around, that would be fairly painless, and might be available for something like $10 (USD). If you were lucky enough to have someone who has since moved on to Win2k or XP, and doesn't need their Win98se disk anymore (& they are no longer using the Win98se) you could do an "over-the-top" with that, even if it isn't an "upgrade" version [for details: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=70846] . . . 98SE shipped with shutdown problems, that's the only added difference I remember

As far as i'm aware 98SE fixed a lot of bugs that 98 had.
Anyway, check the link below, there's an article about the bugs and fixes http://www.pcworld.com/resource/arti...74,pg,2,00.asp

I can't remember all the differences, but they are there. If a product sez it needs Win 98.2, then most likely, it won't run on 98.1 or will give you trouble. A lot of stuff won't work with 98.1 that works with 98.2

Win98Se I think is hell of a lot more stable than the first one. With Win98Se there are slightly more updates installed with the OS.

You may have a problem because of this but unless you can download the update files for win98 you may not but if i do remember rightly Microsoft closed the update site down but just try anyway by clicking on start>windows update.

Even thoughI recommend a newer OS, I would think the Win98SE is much better. It is more compatible with software, and is much more stable. It will still crash, but much less. The shutdown problem could easily be fixed by a Microsoft or 3rd party patch, just search on Google.

I still use 98SE regularly (on my laptop as well as XP pro) and for the last year I don't think it's crashed on 98 once, even though it's running in 16 colours on 98 with no sound because I cant find any drivers other than XP ones.
Anyway the point i was trying to make is that 98SE is fairly stable compared to 95/98, yes there is a shutdown issue but fixes are out there for it (it's never even affected me - mine works fine). |
