Finding my IP

Hi,
trying to find my IP. When i go the usual route of 'run' 'ipconfig' the dos screen blinks up with the ip but then flashes off straightaway. Is there another way and why is this happening?

Cheers

Go to Google and type in "Find my IP" and you'll get a ton of pages.

My ipconfig does the same thing, so i cant help you there.

Hope that helps
Mike

Don't type "ipconfig" in the Run box, because you won't be able to see it. First, open a command prompt window, and then type "ipconfig". That way it won't disappear.

type the following into notepad:

ipconfig
pause

and save it as a ".bat" file. this way when you click on the file it will give you your ip address. create a shortcut in your startup folder and you can monitor what ip address you get when you start windows.

I had a batch file once that would copy the output from ipconfig to the clipboard. Pretty clever, I thought.

ipconfig works when you have no router, but what to do when you do? I go to http://www.whatismyip.com and copy that, but is there a quicker way?

If you're behind a router you could check in your router settings, but that would probably take just as long

*EDIT* also, if you're behind a router, ipconfig won't show the IP you are identified on the internet as, just the IP that you are seen as within the network

*DOUBLE EDIT* I just realized Metaphorically mentioned that already. I gotta get glasses

I was thinking about the router setup page and maybe using the wget command line utility. I could have it grab the status page off the router, then parse it out and copy my ip address to the windows clipboard (usually I want it to give someone a url on my personal web server or to start a network game). This would work, but I'd like a more... normal way to do it.

It takes me about three seconds to do that, how much faster do you need?

Talking about grabbing pages, parsing them, piping the output elsewhere...you don't want to do it the normal way, you want to do it the geek way.

Okay... Highlight > CTRL-C. There, that's faster.
