Hello, I have a problem that I just can't seem to find an answer for. I have a process that is loading twice. I don't remember changing anything that could affect this but I have had some nasty spyware problems in the recent past so maybe... I have done the usual searches (Google) and either I am not asking the right question or ?? Anyway, any help is welcome and appreciated.

I'm sorry, it's a background process for Fellow's MediaFace 4, a CD label making program, called Sethook.exe. It worked fine for over a year, but now is loading twice. I can open taskmanager and stop one of them, but that is so annoying. Thanks

I would first check the startup folder under the start menu and make sure it is only there once. If it is, or is not there at all (likely), I would then check the registry. Programs to run on startup are located at HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current VVersion/Run and HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current VVersion/Run. However, if you aren't comfortable with dealing with the registry, don't fool with it.

I didn't find it in the any of the user start menus or in the HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Run. I did find it listed once in the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Run. I do consider myself as a knowledgeable user but maybe not a power user so any fix, even in the registry, I wouldn't be uncomfortable with. Thanks

FYI, I did find out how to fix (stop) the second process from loading. I went into MSCONFIG and under the startup tab, the Sethook.exe process was listed twice and both boxes were checked. I have no idea how they come to be repeated there. I unchecked one of the boxes and rebooted. The process only loaded once and the there is only one icon for that process in the tray. Yahoo!
Thanks for the help and I hope this might help someone in the future. If anyone knows how that process came to be listed twice or, if they know how to remove the second listing in MSCONFIG? Please email me or post here. Thanks again. |

MSCONFIG will tell you where it is being loaded from. It's the right column.

Just out of curiosity: I also use this program, and can't help but wonder why you have it loading at startup. Any extra processes you run at startup slow down your boot and the comp in general. I may use the program 2-3 times a week and run it from the desktop shortcut when I need it.

I checked out MSCONFIG and the second load of Sethook.exe is Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run which is the same as the first loading except it's missing the HKLM/ at the start of the location. Odd huh? As to why I have it run at startup, I can't tell you. When I loaded the Mediaface program, it just showed up with no options that I seen. If you know how to shut it down, I'm all ears. The tray icon is a green checked thing with the label of MediaFace 4.0 Integration. I included a screen shot of the tray icons expanded. Thanks for the help.

Maybe I don't have enough posts to allow an attachment but it wouldn't let me include the screenshot. Sorry.

Go back to MSCONFIG/Startup Tab, and uncheck the one that you left checked. This should keep it from starting, but if the registry forces it to start, you'll have to make a registry change. However, I think that will stop it from loading. It shows in the same place in my registry but doesn't load at startup.

Thanks, I did that and it did stop loading. I just wished I knew how it showed up twice. Oh well, maybe on the next reload of the OS will fix that.

Attachments are limited to 100K filesize, your number of posts has nothing to do with it.
