Desktop disappears and comes back again?

Every time windows xp starts in a couple of seconds about 40 secs the desktop disappears (icons, taskbar) and then it reappears, this started to happen when i put my speaker to the sound card to have 5.1.

I also am having problems with my USR 56K modem, every now and then it stops responding but the connection is still there, I just recently bought it so I think it might be faulty.

this is total speculation, but it could be explorer (the shell) crashing, and restarting. You might make sure you have the latest service pack installed and/or latest version of IE--if not then do it, if so then maybe a overlay install of windows'll fix it.

But that wouldn't explain the issues with the peripherals.

Try to uninstall and then reinstall your display drivers. Whenever i update my display drivers, the first time i reboot the desktop flashes black for a couple seconds, but then does not happen again, so it could very well be a driver issue.

Its very possible that it would. Besides, its always a good thing to have updated drivers anyways.
