Event Log Scripting

My boss has tasked me with writing a script to backup and empty our event logs programmatically. I've found something in the resource kit for win2k, but I'm confused, and looking for a little support/information.

Has anyone used the eventlog.pl perl script that comes with the win2k resource kit?

Isn't the idea of this a little wrong headed? I thought half the purpose of emptying the event logs was actually looking at them to see if there are problems with the servers?
