How to access old XP folders in a previous installation on the same hard disk
My PC is running Windows XP. Recently it gave me the blue screen. I tried to re-install and it crashed in the middle of install. I installed XP again but in a different folder. Instead of using folder "Windows" the new folder is "WinXP".
Now when I start my PC I have the option to go into the new "WinXP" folder and everything works, except I cannot access my old files. When I start my PC and choose the old "Windows" folder, it just give me the error message that system files are corrupted and I have to re-start. I want to recover my old files. I know it is still in the disk but I cannot access them. Any suggestions on how I can access these old files?

Sounds like you can't boot up to your old install but can't you just navigate to the folder and save what you need?

Why would you need to access the old system folder? Can you see your My Documents and things, the only reason I can think of accessing the windows system folder is if you have saved things in there, which I don't think you have done, and don't know why anyone whould.

Yes, I still cannot get into my old WinXP install.
The reason I want to get into my old WinXP install is to access the emails, favourites, Word files and Exel files. After I installed the new WinXP in another directory on the same hard disk, I can see the old folders but I do not have access permission. Even when I log in as Administrator, I still cannot open the folders in the old WinXP.

Thanks for the instructions on taking ownership of the folders and files.
IT WORKS. I can now access all my old files and folders in the old XP install.
