You can do a roll back which takes the system back to how it was when it was running smoothly. If you have a set restore point, you can do this by going to system restore.

Have you tried booting the system into safe mode??? When the OS is booting up keep pushing the F8 key and select safe mode. This will bypass the startup files where the missing file may be located.

If you deleted the file to your Recycle Bin and didn't dump the Bin, you can retrieve it form there in Safe Mode and restore the file.

Go into windows in safe mode and if you know the file name,
Click start>run and type in "SFC", System file checker will allow you to extract that one file from the installation CD to it's original location. Hope this helps

But that is the think Designer he cannot boot up into the OS to run this. Only way he can do this is to search for altered files whilst in safe mode and if it finds any it should restore them. However in safe mode the OS skips booting the startup files and doesn't recognise any CD-ROM.

When booted up into safe mode click on start>run>then type sfc and hit return then when the screen is shown select the radio button for checking for altered files then run the file checker and restore the file if it filnds any altered of corrupt files and make sure the file gets backed up.

The system file check asks you if you want to back the files up.

Is it a HP PC because if it isn't it will not work but will work and set the PC back to factory settings if it is a HP PC.

Evo - did you ever add a Kyro video card to the system?
That's an odd message to see: it's prompting for the installation CD of your video card. If you've got it around, I suppose it can't hurt to try it (from the point where you are prompted for it) Like Lard mentions, if the HP Recovery disk came with your computer, it might work - but some Recovery disks only reformat and reinstall everything to factory original settings. All data added since then is lost (and if you've added any hardware, for the recovery to go smoothly, you need the original hardware). Some Recovery sets allow a partial recovery (just the Operating System, or just a driver, or just a selected program). You'll have to look at the help files on that Recovery disk to tell. One option - if a friend will let you borrow their WinMe CD just for a repair over-the-top, that should get your system back to basic health (though you still may need to find your video driver). Details for an over-the-top are here: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=70846 Best of luck . . . Gary |
