drive icons missing

WIndows ME system has all icons on the desktop. When opening my computer no drives are listed. If you go through explorer you see the drives but no folders are displayed in the right pain. Just removed trj/virtumonde.a trojan from the system but still having some issues.

Here's a quick fix to try: Search for a file named shelliconcache and delete it. [It's usually a hidden file, so in Windows Explorer/View/Folder Options - use the setting "Show all files"]. The file is usually in C:\Windows. Windows will rebuild the file on reboot.

I'd normally recommend using System Restore, but you'd have to make sure a copy of the trojan isn't in the restore folder first.

Using the command line i've tried finding and deleting the file. It tells me it does not exist. When i try copying from another ME machine it asks if i want to overwrite the file. When i select yes, it says access denied.

I went in through safe mode. I was able to see all icons via safe mode and deleted the shelliconcache file. Rebooted.

Didn't work though.

Any other suggestions?

Wasn't sure if that would do it in WinMe, I was hoping we'd get lucky.

If you have pretty good AV and antispyware programs, & they don't find anything in your restore folders, I suppose you could try the System Restore. Hopefully there'll be a restore point from just before all the trouble.

I'm pretty sure there are some manual repairs related to this, but I don't remember them right now - If the Restore doesn't work, or if another tech doesn't have that info for us, I'll see if I can look it up again.

Total Recall is not anywhere near what my brain does lately!
