Possible Virus (?)
Hey there,
Having a problem with Win2k...I'm able to connect to the net through my dial-up connection, but then I can't check my e-mails, or browse IE or anything. LiveUpdate won't work on my Norton either, and when I right-click Norton in the taskbar, it won't even let me open it. The only option it allows is "Disable". That's why I'm suspicious that it might be a virus. If anyone could help me in any way at all I'd be very grateful. I have access to the 'net through my laptop aswell, so if there was a fix-it file or something, I'd be able to download it and transfer... Thanks! ~Brian |

you may have a damaged winsock.
goto your Command prompt and try the following ftp 127.0.0.1 if you get a socket 10047 you have a program that can be fixed with a program called winxpfix (works with all windows 95-xp) do the test and post the error code. mind you a 1006X is good.

If you get a socket 10047 error or a few other socket errors you can get the winxpfix from
http://tntmax.com/Download/Software/ They have it listed on the page and the file size is rigth. However that is not where I used to get it. The place I used to get it appears to have been removed. If you download it, be safe and norton scan it. It should be ok. Edit i just downloaded it and it is the program I thought it should be. Just run it, your choice to back up reg. Hit Fix, reboot when the program tell you too.. Also, if you have a firewall, your settings could be too high to allow you to surf, try lowering firewall settings first. NOT DISABLE, lower. Glad to hear that worked.
over a year ago is when winsock Damage started to become common. It was almost impossible for us to deal with because we started getting calls out of the blue thatwhere connect no surf. I know we where sending them up to our Tier 3 department that was confused for a while. Then a guy on my team came up with a reg fix that worked and passed it on to our tier 3 because we aren't suppose to do reg edits even at tier 2. Later some found LSP fix, but I never had much sucess with it. then a couple of us came up with several simple tests to find out if it was the winsocks, the ftp i gave you is almost a dead ringer for them. Anyways, we found the winxpfix and I have been using it for over a year. Anyways, we normally find that damage connected to having spyware on computers. You may need to run "spybot search and destory 1.3 "and or "adaware". If you already have spybot, get the new verision 1.3, much better I believe. has nice features. |
