Startup without user password
I think I'm missing something. I should know how to change this, but all I can find is using Registry Editor. Why is it that on my own machines when I have it set to a single user name, the boot goes directly to the start screen without requiring a logon? But on prebuilt machines, like HP, Dell, etc. the user icon is always displayed even when no password has been set. How do I make the prebuilt ones with single user boot directly to the start screen?

Try going control panel > user accounts > [select a user] > create password, and leave it blank.
That might do it.

Good ideas, guys. but neither worked. Tried each separately and together. Tried turning off the Welcome screen to, but it still wants a password, even when there isn't one.

I googled this-
Windows XP - solution 1: Select Run from the Start Menu, type control userpasswords2, and click Ok. Turn off the Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer option, and click Ok. Or- Obtain and install the Windows XP version of TweakUI. Open TweakUI (it's in Start -> Programs -> Powertoys for Windows XP). Expand the Logon branch, and click Autologon. Turn on the Log on automatically at system startup option, type your username and password, and click Ok. and this- From the Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel. Double click Passwords, then click Change Windows Password. Type in the current password in the Old Password box, then press the Enter key three times (to bypass the entries for New Password and Confirm New Password. Select the User Profiles tab. Click the button next to All users of this PC use the same preferences and desktop settings. Click OK, then restart the machine. The TweakUI option seems like it would work if all else fails. -Spartan |

Got it! The two comps I was working on had both created an account called ASP.net (or something like that). Limited account with a password. I deleted that account so only the Owner account was listed and it boots directly to the start up now. Thanx for the ideas guys.

The "asp.net" account is created when the "NET Framework" update is installed from the Windows update site. Uninstalling that update in Add/Remove Programs will also get rid of the account.
