master volume problem

I recently had a problem with norton firewall 2002. I uninstalled it, and now when I try to drag the slide bar of the master volume, instead of getting the windows XP "ding", my PC speaker beeps.

Any ideas? Specs in sig. I've already tried reinstalling the drivers multiple times; both the SB drivers and the KX drivers.

Just for clarification, does your sound still work (in games, music and windows startup sound) ?

Is this problem is ONLY with the slider making the wrong noise?

For the record I have no idea what's going on and why Norton Firewall is screwing with system sounds.

Yes, all other sounds are normal. No problems.

Yes, it is only with the slider that this problem is happening. Instead of the default windows ding I used to get through my speakers, I get a beep from the internal speaker.

It might not be the best thing but one idea (you said any ideas) might be to uninstall and reinstall the sound card, if it bothers you that much. Just an idea. Good Luck.

Did you check Sounds in the control panel to see of there was a sound set up for the 'default beep'? It should be set to "Windows XP Ding' by default.

Help!

Ok Alot happened so it took awhile.
1. I booted in safe mode F8.
2. I went to control, clicked sounds and I had no control of volume.
3. I then restarted my computer and I noticed my volume icon in the low screen was now gone!
4. I then clicked control panel.
5. went back into sound and still had no function available to me to adjust volume.
6. I opened media player and had volume and could only adjust through the media player.
7. I then restored my computer to yesterday and everything is still screwed up.
My tower volume beeps when using the slider. I also noticed my computer shuts down slower since the volume problem.
Please remember this all happened after I tried to install norton 2005 had problems and had to reinstall. Norton works fine!
Any additional help would be great! Thanks for your time. Jason

Have you checked your registry HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services to make sure that all the services and device drivers from Norton Firewall were properly uninstalled. Norton has a habit of leaving little tidbits behind. Just a suggestion.

PLease advise

I got the volume problem corrected. I don't understand how Norton can get away with such crap! Stay away from NAV 2005 When using XP.
I still think the computer shuts downs slow! It shuts down slower definately after I installed Norton 2005.
I don't know if the program causes it to shut down slower of if there is still something not working correctly at shut down.
Is there any way to deterimine if the computer is shutting down correctly?
Please advise when you find time.
Once again! Thanks everyone for your help!
Jason
