C: Prompt not working correctly

I have Windows XP Home Addition and recently noticed that something has gone wrong the( C: ) path that leads to Windows. My Computer/C:/Windows/Program Files ect. When I click on the C: Icon I now hear the sound it makes when windows powers up and nothing more. Also the C: Icon has changed and looks like a CD Icon. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks!

Are you talking about the C Drive inside My Computer or are you talking about a shortcut to the C Drive?

so when you click start button > my computer box, you get to a screen where the cdrom drive and the floppy drive and the shared documents etc are stored?
if this is correct, you say that the local C drive is not displayed there also??
if you right click on the start button and left click on explore, do you get a page where the left of the screen shows all software in different locations INCLUDING the C drive?

we need to clarify the mention you are using of a "C prompt" which is a msdos program outside of xp etc.

Yes that is correct. When I click on Start then My Computer I get the screen that displays all my drives 3 1/2 floppy Drive/C: drive/shared documents/ect...only my C: drive Icon has somehow changed apperance and now look like CD and when I click on it I only hear the sound of windows opening and it does not continue on to Program Files like it should do. Hopefully I've explained it more clearly this time.

you have three rows of items.
top row says "files stored on this computer"
second says "hard disk drives"
third says "devices with removable storage" correct?

in the middle row under "hard disk drives" your local disk (C) should be located.

also, is there any other mention of other devices listed in this middle row

in the bottom row under "devices with removable storage", what items are listed there?

try right clicking on the item in the middle row that you think is your hard drive C and select properties.
at the top of the box, what kind of device properties does it say it is displaying??

Second Row I have C and D drives I right clicked on C drive and clicked properties and it is C drive. But when I click on the C drive Icon it does not continue on to Program Files or the next screen.
