I DL'ed it, and was going to try it on a computer that FedEX ground dropped and crushed the case on,everything still worked and they paid the claim on it, but I forgot to bring in the disk I put it on.
Now if the computer UPS dropped and crushed the case on still works when I get it back.

I got the latest version through windows update yesterday, and all works fine for me. An initial problem that i had was not all of the system tray icons were showing up in the notification area of the taskbar. I fixed this (so far, anyway) by placing a shortcut to systray.exe in my startup folder.

All is well, so far.

XP SP2 RC2 is good. I've had no (major) problems with it so far.

Halo trial version will not run as it will crash upon launch.

Things to expect:

The full install will take quite a bit of time and half the time is spent as SP2 backups files so uninstallation can succeed.

DirectX 9.0c (final or beta? not sure) is included - no problems so far.

Upon booting you will notice some changes in the boot splash screen. Previously it said, "Windows XP Professional/Home" and copyright date below. Now it'll just say "Windows XP" and no copyright date below.

The IE popup blocker is neat, I like it. Now if only IE had tabbed browsing I'd drop Firefox

I don't notice any browser speed increase as pages don't load any noticably faster.

Windows will keep nagging you and/or display a red shield in the system tray if Windows detects no firewall and/or detects automatic updates is set off.

Heon2574,

Is there a download for burning to a cd available?
Guess I could go look.

I am currently trying to install it, but it is having problems with the file "plylst9.wpl" It says the setup can not copy the file, and it wants me to find the location to get the file from. It is trying to access it from my hard drive, but seems to be having problems with it. I can find the file, and show it to setup, but it fails to work. My only option is to find it and make it work, or I have to exit setup.

Can somebody help me here? Thanks.

Had some problems installing SP2 RC2. . I got an "advanced error" at the end, even when I uninstalled SP2 RC1 first. So I did a clean install and now it works fine

Haven't noticed anything new besides the DirectX 9.0c.

Just like with SP2 RC1, you can deactivate it.

I've heard that sp2 rc1 had problems uninstalling for some people and that it should be fixed in rc2.

I haven't been able to find anything about why exactly this happened or how I can fix it. I did submit a report to Microsoft. I am wondering if this has anything to do with the fact that I have Windows Media Player 10 beta installed.... I think I'm going to uninstall it and then try the update again.

Well I got some comments now.

First let me say that I have two computers in my household, one is my personal laptop, and the other is the family's desktop. At first I tried to install SP2 RC2 on my laptop.

I got an error on my laptop about the play list file, so I had to uninstall what little I had installed of SP2. I uninstalled WMP 10, reverting back to WMP 9, just to give that a shot. Well I tried to install SP2 again, but it still didn't work. However, this time IT FROZE! Because it froze, I was unable to uninstall it the way it should have been done.

Meanwhile, I was installing it on our desktop, and although it took forever, it worked wonderfully.

So I uninstalled the half of SP2 that I had installed for the second time on my laptop, but things were totally unstable. When I rebooted.....

The screen res was at 640x480, and the computer was going ballistic! It was recongnizing every single piece of hardward on my laptop, like it had never seen it before. At first my mouse didn't work, and I had to use the touchpad. One by one it recongized things, USB ports, LAN card, modem, even my video card. After a while of all of this installing of drivers, the mouse became operational. After a reboot and some tinkering, everything seem to be back to normal now, but I'm sure some files are still corrupted.

So on the desktop everything went fine, but on my desktop, hell broke loose. Amazingly though, XP Pro on my laptop was able to piece everything back together. I'm not sure if XP Home on our desktop would have done the same.

Phewf....

No more beta testing for major service packs for me.

SP 2 seems to be a pig big time! My C drive grew by 2.5 GB after the installation. After I turned off the restore point, I still got 1.1 GB from the 100 MB file!

Angry Fire

I can't install my Word 97 anymore. It says the setup program doesn't support my version of Windows.
Gotta find a way around it. . .

Thanks for all the info about your experiences with SP2.
Think I'll wait. I'm chicken!

Yep, I'm definately not rearing to put my system at the mercy of SP2 as of yet.

Hmm. Today I just tried it again and the setup program of Word 97 worked. I mean, it didn't give me the error message. But after customizing the install options setup froze and I had to kick it with the task manger.
Used the compatibility mode and then setup worked and now I have my Word 97 installed again
