Can anybody tell me why....

...My system is starting to become "unresponsive" while operating browser windows or using Windows Media Player with DVDs?

I have a hunch that it is Norton related, but I may be off. Here are my systems, my problem, my findings and my basis.

I have two PCs:

Desk Top - 1998 Gateway Performance 450, Pentium III, 448Mhz, and 385RAM operating out of Windows XP.

Lap Top - 2002 Sony VAIO NV170, Pentium IV, 1.6Ghz and 512 RAM, operating out of Windows XP. I loaded both with Norton Works. I loaded the Sony with Norton Internet Security.

Soon after, the Sony started the lock up unresponsive problem that ususally results in closing down the browser. After a while of putting up with this, the whole thing crashed and I had to reformat and reload XP. After a while it started again, so I removed the Norton software. I now depend on Pcillian for protection. It seems to be doing fine.

Now the Gateway is acting up. Before I uninstall Norton (I am hesitant because unlike the Sony I have no other protection) I thought I would ask you all.

It is my systems, Norton, am I "overclocking", or is it some other issue?

If it is Norton, then what should I replace it with and which version, McAfee maybe?

Thanks guys.

If I were you I'd uninstall Norton and not even think about McAffee (both bloated programs). Install the free Zone Alarm for a firewall, and one of the free AV programs, such as AVG.

Just search on Google for Zone Alarm and AVG antivirus. You'll get hits.
