XP doesn't boot
I just started having problems with XP starting up. I get up to the point where the XP logo is on the screen and the progress bar keeps moving then the screen goes blank and nothing, I have to reboot and try again. I haven't installed anything recently but I did recently turn off the PC, I usually leave it on all the time.
I have booted up in safe mode and that works. I have used the system restore and gone back a month but the problem still hasn't been corrected. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The PC is running Windows XP Pro Abit IC7-G| ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128M| P4 2.6Ghz| 2 Kingston 256MB PC3200| WD 120GB| Lite-On 811 DVD-RW| Lite-On 16X XJ-HD166S| ANTEC TrueBLUE480| XASER III V2000A |

Have you tried running a virus scan while in safemode?

Welcome to PCMech!
I would do a virus scan as DBG suggested, and an online one such as TrendMicro Housecall, spyware scans and if that doesn't fix it update drivers, and then if it still doesn't work do a repair install. Never had this experience on XP (have on 98SE though) and so sorry if this doesn't work. |

I tried everything in the previous post but when I am doing the repair the pc eventually just goes to a black screen and I have to reboot. I figure some piece of hardware is failing but am unsure where to start. Any suggestions?

It could be that you have bad RAM. Find a spare RAM stick that you have laying around somewhere, a stick that you know is good, and test it with the RAM in your PC to see if you have a bad RAM stick.
If that proves ok, you could check to see if your power supply is going bad. If you have another PC at home that you don't mind testing with, take the PSU out of the computer and put it in the computer your testing it with to see if it's bad. If the above doesn't help, you could just go around and test every component until you find something bad. Pain in the butt, I know. I hope this helps though. |

does the progress bar move in the expected manner i.e. just as fast as before? I had a heatsink retention clip fail and the intel chip clocked down to save itself from frying, once I fixed the retention clip I was back on track, to test just give the heatsink a gentle tug, it should be firm against the mobo, any movement of it at all and it is not on the cpu so is not working to full effectiveness.

The problem ended up being the graphics card not being entirely seated correctly. As soon as I pushed it in all worked again.
Thank you for the suggestions |
