Any other methods?

Now I know that Windows ME is by far the most crappiest OS out there, and unfortunately I have it and I need to know whether there are any other methods besides formatting if you can't do a system restore.

Just previously my system BSOD'ed and I forgot to take a note of what it said so I could look the file up that was causing the problem. I tried to do system restore and tried all the checkpoints that I had, and none of them worked!!

Is there any other way besides formatting?

TIA...

Try virus scans, spyware scans etc before you format, try (disconnecting from the internet first) any firewall and antivirus software since these can cause BSOD's with some computers. Does this happen regulary, can you start in safe mode?

Are you still getting the BSOD's that can be researched?

No, it only happens occasionally.

How do you boot into safe mode? Do you need the boot floppy diskette to do that?

EvyStevy I don't know lol. I can't remember what the BSOD said. I'll make sure I make a note of what it is next time it shows it's ugly face on the screen.

Press F8 (I think) on boot to go into safe mode, but if you can get into normal mode there is not much point.

Ok, I'll try that some time and do a virus scan while I'm there. But like you said, there's not much point if the system still runs smoothly depsite the BSOD popping up.

Thanks for the very quick replies btw. I didn't think it would happen -that- fast!

Hit F8 repeatedly to get the windows start options during bootup. If you can get into windows normally (you'll have CD-ROM support then if not in safe-mode) you could do an over-the-top install. Just pop the ME CD in and run setup from windows and it should install over itself but retain all your software and drivers.

U bet that Windows ME is the crappiest OS out there and that is one of the flaws in a way in Win ME because it creates restore points but never lets you restore from them.

If it is possible for you to get hold of a copy of the OS it is possible to put it the CD-ROM and run setup as a repair installation. This will save your system files and repair any problems in the Windows directory.

Win ME isn't the stablest OS out there and the best.

ME needs a patch called 290700usam for restore to work available fom microsoft site.
Better if you disable the system restore in ME though and do a restore by start/run and type in the box scanreg /restore
leave a space between scanreg and the forward slash.
