I found a great tip to stop annoying mysterious XP pop-ups.
Go to Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services (or Start / Run and type in "services.msc"). This will bring up a long list of Windows services that ar running or available on your system. Find "Messenger" and double click to open the Properties box. In the "Startup Type" field, change the setting to "Manual". You could choose "Disable", but if any services depend on Messenger they will fail to start, so you're better off playing it safe. ![]() Click OK to save changes.

You can check under Dependecies for any programs or other services that use the service in question if you choose to disable, in my case there are none.

If you want to review all the Services that may be deemed 'unnecessary', visit BlackViper.com. He has done an excellent job of analysing the need for each service and suggests which you can disable and which you can change from automatic to manual. This speeds up your boot time and frees up resources thereby allowing for a quicker running system.
Here's a link to his XP Services recommendations. http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

Be warned however altering your services can result in an unusable system.
Please understand what you are disabling. Blackviper.com does a perty good job of explaining these things.

I stumbled across that same solution when I was running XP Home a few years back and what was more annoying was the fact that 90% of the pop-ups were trying to sell you products that stop pop-ups from companies that advertise with them.
