Question Streaming Video in IE with WMP - Craziness

Hello Everyone,

I recently encountered a problem trying to stream video off a news site using Windows Media Player built into a webpage. The video worked fine before, but after installing some audio codecs (they are now removed), opening a window in IE with WMP trying to stream video would cause that window to freeze completely, forcing a ctrl-alt-del end task for IE.

After reinstalling WMP 9.0, the pages won't freeze in IE anymore, however the video won't load either. All there is is a black box with video player controls at the top of the box (they should be at the bottom) that are unresponsive except for volume, which slides up and down.

Here are the details of my system:

Windows XP SP1 Pro
Athlon 1800+
512MB RAM
Windows Media Player 9

Also, Netscape and Mozilla both freeze when I try to view the same video streaming pages.

I do not believe it is a site-specific problem, as I have tried it on two WMP streaming sites with the exact same problem. The first is www.ctv.ca (Canadian news site), the other is www.cpac.ca (Canadian public access political tv service).

I would greatly appreciate any help in resolving my problem. Thank you for reading my thread, and have a nice day.

Thank you,
Geron

In WMP have you checked the Tools>Options>File Types>Performance.
What do the settings show ?
You want hardware acceleration on in Performance and you want the files for streaming audio and video checked as default in File Types.
Do you have the latest HotFixx for WMP installed?

It's become a problem lately for a lot of people just lately but your problem is the codecs that definitely borked something.
I'm guessing your WMP settings are wrong.
