Win 98...invalid system disk

Im running windows 98...and my computer (HP Pavilion 8160) recently restarted randomly (it does this all the time but hadnt done it for a while) and came up with "invalid system disk, replace and strike any key". So i put in my boot disk for win 98 and it said that i should restart again, choose to start the computer without cd rom support and type "A:\ SYS X:" where X is the host or startup drive. From here i tried C: which seemed to work, but when i restarted it again i got only a C: prompt. I also tried A:, which said it could not specify default drive. Any ideas? thanks.

Do you have any others disk or cd's in drives?

Verify that C: is set as the first boot device in Bios.

i went to make sure C was the first boot device, but cannot access my BIOS since the regular computer startup does not complete it just goes to the C:\ prompt or if i put the system disk it brings up the menu for that...is there any way i can access the bios?

To access the BIOS during bootup, it is usually the del key, or escape, or one of the F keys.

. . . just wondered if the PC is OK now?

. . . was it a Win98 installation disk or a Recovery Disk that you used as a boot disk?

Your computer shouldn't restart all by itself, obviously. This can sometimes be traced to something as simple as overheating. To test for that, if you run into the same trouble in the future, try running the computer with the case open, and also check the fans and for excessive dust buildup.

If you run a complete recovery, it will likely attempt to restore your computer to the same condition it was in when you bought it. All data, all programs, added since then will be erased. And if any hardware changes have been made since then, the recovery might fail, or be problematic. If you have made backups of what files you need, and have installation disks for programs added since, and haven't added any major hardware inside the case, you can go the complete recovery route.

If you have a partial recovery option to just reinstall Windows, you can try that.

Random restarts can be traced to several other hardware problems, too (bad memory, hard drive, motherboard, power supply, etc.) . . . If the restarts seem to happen during gameplay, they can often be fixed with a patch available from the game's website.

Just to make sure your hard drive isn't failing, try running diagnostics [these are available as free downloads from the website of the manufacturer of the hard drive: (for ex: SeaTools for Seagates, DataLifeGuard for Western Digitals, Powermax for Maxtors, etc)]

Hopefully you've got it fixed already, and I've just been getting some typing exercise.
. . . Gary

[p.s. ...commonly, that error usually means what it says: a non-boot disk is in the cdrom or floppy drive]. . .
