Strange XP (possible problem)?

No matter if I hard boot the PC or restart it, when I click the icon to log on and enter my password, it will sit there for about 30 seconds before going to the desktop. When it does, it shows my desktop, but WITHOUT my icons. Those appear about a minute later - what could this be? I have nothing loading in the background, using 512MB of RAM, but I also have 4 hard drives. 2 of them on my IDE channels and 2 of them on a Maxtor expansion card.

Cool

Where is the OS located among the 4 drives?

What is the exact boot order in BIOS?

What type of IDE cables are being used (40 wire/80 wire)?

What is jumpering of each drive and where is it positioned on the IDE cable? Also give IDE mobo position (IDE1/IDE2).

Also, when there is a delay, does the HD activity light come on, or is the computer sitting there doing absolutely nothing? What apps do you have running in the background?

Speeddude, yeah I did all of that - same thing. I'll try scanning again though. OS is on drive C and boot order is C, D and then G, and H which are on my Maxtor expansion card. Using 40 wire and each drive is set on cable select. This just started happening a few months ago and now I am getting curious as to why it has started to do this. I don't have anything running at bootup or in the background......

Cool

If you are truly using 40 wire cable change jumpering to Master/Slave.

If this is a PC of recent vintage I would have figured that at least one of the cables would have been 80 wire in which case CS would be right. Just make sure that the drive with the OS is on the first IDE and the drive is on the end of the cable (Black connector).

Take the other HD's out of the boot sequence. They don't have a OS and do not need to be there.
