registry rebuilder

customer was venturing where he should not have. he was deleting all reference to conexant in his registry. he must have gone wild deleting because now in control panel modems there is no modem listed in general tab. the comports tab lists com3 but no text. if you do more info it queries the modem correctly.
is there a program which will rebuild a pruned registry and put back necessary keys which have been deleted?
wishfullll thinking?
i tried a win98se upgrade install over 98se full but it didn't fix that problem.

You could try an over-the-top install. Doesn't mess with installed programs or personal files. Might work to rebuild the registry.

Would suggest a modem software reinstall. Probably will involve a download of the correct drivers.
And would probably delete com3 to be certain that there is no garbage remaining from the previous install. Probably won't find it on reboot since PCI modems are more software driven than hardware and generally aren't found until the relevant software is installed.

If this has JUST happened in the last couple of days, do
Start > RUN > SCANREG
and from the dates listed, choose the one from the morning when they started this foolishness!

of course, why didn't i think of that!
thanks everyone, i used galaxian's suggestion but all the posts were good. if it hadn't worked i was gonna do an overthetop.
edfair, i wouldn't have thought of deleting that com3, mayhaps in safe mode. i will have to remember that one too.

Glad ya got it. I had one last week similar. Gal started deleting files to stop pop ups. Even an over the top wouldn't fix it. Had to nuke and pave! Saved all her files but it was a lot more work.
