It should be backwards compatible, but will just operate at USB 1.0 speeds. Or to get the most performance you could buy a USB 2.0 card and depending on the amount of ports you need, disable the built in ones.
What model is the unit you are interested in? |

Just a quick FYI: Microsoft does not provide USB 2.0 support for Win9x OS's.

Several of my neighbors report having all sorts of adventures with trying USB 2.0 devices in USB 1.1 ports in their Windows 98/98se computers.
I'd try adding a USB 2.0 PCI card (like edrod suggests), but with the caveat that nothing in USB land is a sure thing in the Windows 98 world. [It's rather ridiculously smooth going in the Win2k SP3+, and the WinXP world] A DVD writer is particular about transfer speeds, even in internal models - you'll definitely want to be conservative in choosing your recording speed in an older system, even with a USB 2 card added in. Best of luck! . . . Gary [p.s. ...there does seem to be a better batting average for using USB 1.1 devices in USB 2.0 ports] |
