Exclamation how to convert from FAT to NTFS

How can I convert my hd from FAT32 to NTFS file system? I heard XP is very unstable in FAT32. Is this true? How can I convert the HD without reloading XP?

I don't think it's Windows XP that is unstable in FAT32, it's just the FAT32 itself that isn't really good. NTFS is far superior.

To convert an existing FAT32 partition to NTFS without losing data (but backup your data anyway, just in case), type in:

convert Drive /FS:NTFS

where Drive is the drive you want to convert. So if you want to convert C: you write convert C: /FS:NTFS

Type it in the command prompt:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro...onvertfat.mspx

If you want to delete ME and put XP just start from the beginning with a clean install.

Clean Install:

Steps:

1. Power on the computer

2. Insert XP CD into CD drive. Press ENTER to resume booting from the XP CD. (BIOS must support booting from CD and boot order must be set so CD boots before hard drive.

3. Next you will get the option to repair or enter setup, choose to enter setup. Press ENTER.

4. Press F8 if you agree to the license.

5. Setup will scan for previous Windows installations

6. If you are using the upgrade version of XP on a computer without any version of Windows currently installed, this is where you will replace the XP CD with your qualifying CD, XP setup will scan the qualifying CD and instruct you to replace it with the XP CD to continue XP setup; otherwise, you will not see this screen.

10. Choose the location to install.

If the hard drive or partition has a previous installation of XP you want to remove, choose to delete the partition by pressing "D". You will then be prompted to create a new partition in the empty space. This will remove all data from the deleted space.

Continue on with the prompts. The above just erased all of your ME making the fresh install of XP possible.

ok how do I make sure NTFS is set up when I reload XP? I bought the HD used, and just dropped the XP disk in, but apparently there are still ME files on there somewhere--how do I rid myself on ME?

I think that's the current capacity of your C: drive that it's asking for.

it's saying I have to "force a dismount" and "all opened handles to this volume would then be invalid" what does this mean?

What are yo doing? If you are converting the main drive then you have to do it from DOS/Recovery Console.

BUT why convert when you can delete the partition and reformat in NTFS if you are installing XP?
