Angry BSOD Only with CD-ROM or dxdiag

Newby to the site, been searching but found no thread that seem to suffer the unique triggers to the BSOD. Any time I try to play a CD-ROM based game the system gives up within the first couple of minutes and gives me a page_fault_in_nonpaged_area or machine_check_exception error on the BSOD, or just hangs in the middle of a scene in the program (Warcraft II BNE in this case but also with Deer Hunter IV, Paint Brawl, any other game my son has tried). Figuring that it might be a display problem in conjunction with DirectX 9, I tried to run dxdiag only to have it hang consistently every time. Downloaded Installed DirectX 9b, no help. Does not occur when surfing the net or working with wordprocessor or Quicken.

Have been to MS Knowledge Base but no successful resolution yet.
Sager Laptop, P-III 1 gig, 512Mb Ram, XP, originally 98SE.

Thanks in advance for input.

Exclamation

Hopefullly, this is resolved though I won't know for sure until after testing it some at home tonight. Was able to play a CD-ROM based game and it did not hang up while running dxdiag for an extended period of time. Looks like it was the audio driver, uninstalled it, rebooted, and let XP reload what it wanted. Seems okay now, only time will tell for sure.

Keeping my fingers and toes crossed!!

FYI,

I was wrong, not fixed, won't be until I reload XP and only put DirectX 8 on system. Problem: Vender is no longer providing driver upgrade support for ATI Rage 128 Mobility video card. ATI does not provide support for laptop cards due to customization by venders and DX 8 was the end of the support chain. This forced system upgrade after only 3 years is for the birds. Price I pay for taking care of my stuff versus throwing it around and tearing it up.

Now I need to find a laptop that has an upgradeable video card.
