directx

I currently have directx 9b. When I play star wars galaxies the game just exits. It may work for 5 mins. it may work for 15 mins. When I had directx 9a my system seemed more stable. I was just wondering is there anyway to go back to directx 9a

My understanding is that you cannot "uninstall" directX. There was a web site that had a DX remover, however it is down now. One way to do this is by doing a repair install of the os; you will have whatever version of DX that came with the os. You can then update to version 9 or 9a.

I tried the repair install last nite. That didn't get rid of the directx 9b. I also tried installing an older version, which also didn't work. Does anyone else have any ideas.

Unless you can find some source of a remover program it is my understanding that a reformat and reinstall is your only option. Have you downloaded the latest drivers for you video and sound cards? I am having a problem with my laptop in that the ATI Rage 128 Mobility will not handle anything past DX-8 as neither ATI nor the system vender is updating the driver which in laptops are a customized job. I am stuck with the reformat/reinstall after one of the games my son tried to play installed DX-9a and I have not found a way to go back. The system just hangs up after a couple of minutes only on games or when trying to run dxdiag.

XP SP2 is coming with 9.0c if you want to wait a bit.

You can get XP SP2 right now, only as a beta. But I have got it and it has 9.0c with it. If you are having problems with 9.0b my guess though is that you would have problems with 9.0c. You could try it, but since 9.0c is in beta then removing it would probably be even harder, and you may have problems with SP2 anyway.

I don't think so. You can remove SP2 completely via Add/Remove Programs, that should take care of DirectX 9.0c too.
I personally haven't had problems with SP2 so far. . but frankly I haven't had problems with DirectX 9.0b either .. .
