Windows XP upgrade

I just completed my first build...which happened to be my friend's...but i am planning to build mine soon..i noticed he had a copy of xp home that came with his now defunct, old computer...since i am going to build soon...and i want xp pro...would it be possible for me to buy the student upgrade version of xp pro and when the install prompts me for a previous os...can i just pop in my friend's xp home cd? ( there shouldnt be any legal issues since he does not use that copy of xp home anymore since his old computer is never going to be used again.) another thing is that my friend can't find the product key for his xp home cd...would that be a problem? shaving off a few dollars would help me a great deal and I'm pretty sure i'm not doing anything illegal since he's basically giving me the xp home cd...

Yes it should work. I've done it with a 98se disk. Keep in mind tho that you have to be a registered College student to qualify for the student upgrade version. You need to furnish you student id number and name of the institution where you are enrolled in order to check out at Newegg. High school students do not qualify.

Excellent! You just saved yourself about $65. Another pointer in case you didn't know. The Student/Teacher version of Office XP can be installed on multiple computers, legally! One desktop and one laptop, I think.
