Dell XP reinstall on new hardrive

I have a new hardrive in my Dell 8200 laptop and need to install XP Pro from the Dell reinstall disk that come with the computer. It states "This CD is not for reinstallation of programs or drivers". Not concerned with the programs of course, but what about the drivers? Thought they were included with the OS installation. Should I go ahead with the installation and get the drivers off the net...or what?

Welcome to PC Mech forums

The reinstall disk that comes with the Dell are only for the originally hard drive, should you need to reformat it. It will not let you install a new Windows XP OS onto the other hard drive - you would need to purchase the Windows XP Pro full version OEM from Newegg, which only costs 140+ USD with "hardware" purchase.

Hope that helps,
kram

I don't know if it would work, but if you could get one of those programs that transfers your files, and see if that reansfers everything....?

Kram, whats the difference between reformating the original hardrive and a new one, isn't all info erased anyway? Does the Dell reinstall disk have the original hardrive serial number imbedded into the disk for comparision?

Dan, might be a way to go, but the MBR isn't transfered is it, anything else?

Thanks guys,
Dave

I'm on mt 3d Dell, and have bought a lot of HD's over the past few years. Seems to me I've done what you want to do, but recommend you check the Dell hardware forum:

BTW, the drivers they are talking about come on a separate CD from the OS. The Dell XP CD is tied to your BIOS, but I don't believe to the hard drive.

Couldn't you use a program like Norton Ghost to make an image of the hard drive, then transfer that image to the new drive?

Well, the reformat disk, at least for many Retail built PCs, are only for fixing - in other words, they check to make sure your PC already has an operating system.

I've used Dell recovery CDs to install new harddrives without any problems. Just start it up with the CD in the drive and do everything the same way you would if you were repartitioning/reformatting and reinstalling on the orginal harddrive.
