Windows XP SP1A & USB's

Hi,

Have a Dell Dimension 8250, applied Windows Service packs 1A, now no USB at all. USB is recognised in control panel, but all devices that are on it now do not work. Unapplied SP1a and got all USB devices back. Tried to install Powerpoint and now get message about an incomplete service pack that needs to be addressed, get the link that takes you to Mickysoft windows update page - and the routine begins again. Have tried a couple of times with the same results. Removed the service pack from control panel - Add / Remove program's. No errors on install or removal encountered. ANy ideas ????
Have looked at the Dell forum and it appears that certain Dell PC's have problems with the sp1a and USB stop working.

regards

Ian Sanders

If Dell doesn't have a patch, get a USB PCI card.

SP1 updates the usb to usb2 and must be installed prior to use of and installation of usb 2 devices.
Make sure usb legacy devices are enabled in bios.
Are any devices usb2?

Hi,

The USB Devices are a BT Speedtouch broadband adsl modem, new Canon Printer and Mouse. Will try and reinstall these drivers, though it does not think that it has any new hardware.

Try Removing the devices you mention in Device Manager rather than update/reinstall the drivers. XP will find them again on reboot and assign the drivers or give you the option to install the ones of your choice.

Hi,

None of the devices are showing in the control panel to remove. The USB Ports are showing in the control panel OK.

How bout when you run the Add New Hardware? Did a google search for "Dell usb problem" and got several hits. Looks like not enough power to run the usb devices is a common cause.

Just did a quick read at Dell on the 8250 and they mention reinstalling the Via usb 2.0 drivers in XP. Normally USB 2.0 is enabled by installing SP1. I'm now wondering if on your Dell you need to install the separate drivers to enable the devices. Worth a try.

That's correct,if using usb2 devices,sp1 must be installed first and then the via usb2 drivers.

Should be from Dell. Check the support site for your specific machine. You should be able to download the latest drivers there.

Hi,

Dell do not appear to have any USB Drivers listed apart from keyboard and network USB Drivers. The PC is a 8250. I have posted on the Dell forum which i have had no response. I think the next step is to try and get the PC to forget it had SP1A installed, so i can get Powerpoint on it. I get the message unable t install as an incomplete update has teken place and will not allow powerpoint to proceed.

That's odd. The article I read referred to VIA drivers but your systems has an Intel chipset not via. I'm lost now.
