Hanging during shutdown

Using win2k, Over the past few weeks my comp hangs for almost 5 minutes during shutdown. No hard drive noise or apparent activity going on. It just sits there with a blue screen and finally dies out. I defrag, virus check, and spyware check regularly so I don't think its anything along those lines. And I also don't see any running processes out of the ordinary.... suggestions?

on a side note, I haven't used ICQ or Yahoo for ages, so I assume I can delete those keys safely?

This issue was a lot more prominant on Win98.. but things to try that have worked... disable power saving features in the BIOS and in Windows.... disable active desktop (if you really want a JPG for your desktop, open it in Paint, then save as a BMP)... check to see if your AV is scanning the A:\ on shutdown and disable that.

Here's a little something from MS. Don't know if it will help, but worth a review.

thanks for the suggestions.. I deactivated the active desktop and checked through the others to make sure they weren't the culprit. I save a few more seconds on shutdown, but I think its still hanging far too long. tried an experiment and even if i'm starting up in safe mode it still does the same thing. very strange.

What antivirus software are you running? When I removed McAffee and installed AVG it ended my 5 minute startup/shut down problem along with many others.

Win 2000 Pro slow shutdown

I read this on a non MS site & it worked 100% for all of my 3, Win 2000 Pro PCs.

I don't remember just where I found it. Go to add/Remove & look for a security update # 329170 I believe it may also say Pre SP4 also.

Remove it. I did & now my shutdowns are less than 8 seconds. This same Critical update comes up with SP4 as a critical update, so just ignore it. When you read how it is used in a large business networks only, we never needed this fix in the first place. Thanks MS.

It may have been www.blackviper.com I read about it. I was getting ill at just sitting there waiting for the PCs to shut down, & removing this update fixed it fast. Write it's # down because I saw it on Win update 1 week later & downloaded it again, whoops dumb move. I removed it again & got back to a fast shut down again.

I hope this does it for you, & anyone else with a sloow win 2000 shutdown. No I have never Down Loaded SP4, & do not plan to, as long as I keep reading how it can cause more problems than it fixes.

interesting.....that's exactly what was causing it I guess. Shutdowns are back to normal. (appx 10 seconds). Although I though I had it the other day when I was shutting down, and windows was shutting down a program that I had never heard of or used. It was called "CiceroUIWndFrame". A google on it turned up a mention that it was part of speech and handwriting for Office XP, and can cause crashes. I disabled it because I have no need for it. But the weird part is that I haven't used office in over a week.
