If it's a Western Digital hdd, you may have to set the jumper to the "neutral" position. See here

its a seagate drive and the jumper is in the correct position. Bios is recognizing it as primary master.

Did you format first during the install process?

What motherboard do you have ?
Does the motherboard have another IDE controller or just the 2 IDE slots that are natively supported by the chipset ? RJ

Is it detecting the hdd in the bios at all times? It just maybe your hdd has a fault in the boot sectors.

I see. So the board has 2 IDEs that are natively supported by the chipset, and then 3 (?) others. Maybe the third one is a floppy connector as I don't remember a board with an odd number of IDEs. . but anyway, they are not natively supported by the chipset, they have their own controller.
Now where is the HDD connected to ? If it's connected to an IDE port natively supported by the chipset, Windows XP Setup should detect it. If it's connected to the other ports, you will need to feed Windows XP with the driver on a floppy. RJ |

your right on about the board RJ...
there's 2 natively supported IDEs, 2 others, and a floppy connector. I think I got the hdd plugged into the one of the natively supported ones (when plugged in here it shows in bios). I tried plugging it in to the other IDE port just to see what would happen and I got a different error message. I'm thinkin at this point I may just have a bad drive. |
