How to install WinXP on second HDD?
I installed a new HDD in my computer, intending to make it a replacement for the current boot drive, which runs WinXP Home. The plan was to use Western Digital Data Lifeguard software (supplied with the new disk) to copy the entire contents of the old boot disk to the new one. I would then remove Windows from the old boot disk, swap cables on my EIDE controller if necessary, and begin booting from the new drive.
That was the plan. What happened was that Data Lifegard, in several attempts, never could seem to finish the process of copying my original disk. However, it did manage to do two things: 1. It changed the drive letter of the new disk to C. The old one is now D, and that's how WinXP sees it. 2. It munged both the original and the new copies of Windows so that it wouldn't boot from either drive. I spent most of the holiday weekend getting Windows reinstalled and properly updated on the original drive. (No need to go into the complications, but it really did take all that time.) The new drive is too big for WinXP (in the pre-SP1 version on my setup disk) to recognize, and though it listed the disk (now drive C), it reported this disk unformatted. The system now boots from drive D. Now that WinXP is updated and drive C is formatted, I'd like to do a clean install onto this drive so that I can begin using it as my boot drive -- without first uninstalling the OS from drive D. Is anyone exerienced at doing such a thing? I can find information about installing two different OSs in differerent partitions, but nothing about installing the same OS twice, even though this is just the first stage in transferring it from one drive to another. The setup disk seems to be fixated on reinstalling on top of the current copy; I haven't found a way to tell it to leave that one alone and install fresh on the new disk. Any idea what I should do?
