how do I reformat my harddrive and make sure the file system is NTFS with WINXP?

I'm assuming you have an XP CD:
Boot from your XP disc (by setting the boot order in your BIOS to boot from the CDROM first). Choose to do a clean install, and when you come to the partitioning part of the install, delete any partitions you may have (if you don't mind losing the data stored on them), then create new ones, and choose to format them. It should format them in NTFS. |

Incidentally, you don't need to format the drive if all you want to do is convert to NTFS; you can use the 'convert' command to do as well

True, I guess I just assumed that he didn't have XP installed.
To do that you would go to the command line and type: convert c: /fs:ntfs *That's assuming that C is the drive you want to convert to NTFS. |

You can also download an app that would do this. Partition Magic I hear is great. I use swiss knife because its free
Another way this can be done is by going to control panel... admin tools.... comp management...disk manager.
