xp repair

I changed out my motherboard/cpu and I know that I have to do a repair install of windows now, but when I attempt to do the repair it asks for an administrator's pasword and I don't know what to enter. I would really appreciate any help.

Thank you

have you tried just hitting ok?
sometimes it doesnt have one at all even though it asks for one...
as another option you could try either "administrator" or "username" for username and "password" for password....
that has worked for me on more than one occasion

all the passwords you suggested were invalid, but when I just hit enter it would go to the next line and say C:windows. then when I try to type anything it says its an invalid command and tells me to type HELP for a list of valid commands. does this mean I don't have to enter a password? if so, then what command do I have to type to get the repair done?

First...what version of windows is it...
And how exactly are you attempting to repair it?

it is windows xp. I am repairing it by booting from cd with the xp disc in the drive and then choosing the repair option, as apposed to the whole regular install.

OK then that is the problem...
merely boot from the cd and choose to install as you normally would... when it checks for a previous version of windows, it will find your XP and ask if you want to repair it... this is unlike the first repair option in that it merely removes the main windows files and re-installs them without removing your saved files and installed programs...
one warning though... you may want to backup your favorites and your outlook express if that is what you use for your E-mail...
I use BackRex Demo version...

So then you were able to repair?
Hope my explanation worked... Ive used that option many times to fix windows ... it gets bogged down over time...
I would also suggest using XPSmoker to tweak your settings and RegScrubXP to clean up your registry...
XPSmoker
click on "XPSmoker trial"
RegScrubXP
click on download and then choose a download mirror.
