Compaq driver problems

To anyone who may have an answer...

I have seen several threads here recently with folks experiencing problems loading XP on Compaq computers. I am about to take on a job re-formatting and installing a new OS on a friend's Compaq. He is running 2000 ME, doesn't like it and would be just as happy to go back to 98 SE.

Are most of these problems with Compaq associated with XP or are they simply because of proprietary Compaq hardware or software? Am I likely to run into any of these problems loading an older OS like 98 SE?

Thanks,

-Kev

With compaqs, it's usually best to keep the origional O/S on there (if you have a restore disk, use that). It's often easier than to try to find generic drivers that will work with the hardware. Compaqs can get cranky if they don't have exactly what they need.

OK, thanks FF!

This guy says he has his recovery disk so maybe I can isolate what infections he has and download the removal tools from Symantec. After that it's just a matter of clean-up.

I've had good luck with pavilions and other HP products but have never worked with Compaq before.
