XP Home Edition Transfer
I am working with a PC that currently has Windows XP Home Edition installed on the default C: drive. I am attempting to create a back up boot drive that will have Windows on it, in the unfortunate case that the C: drive fails in the middle of a large project. When I try to install Windows XP on the new drive, just recently installed via an IDE Controller, it automatically wants to Upgrade or Re-install what I have on the C: drive. I have looked through the BIOS page at the beginning and can not seem to figure out how to re-direct the Windows installation to the new drive (G
. This new drive is a Western Digital 60GB hard drive installed via docking bay in the PC itself. The computer recognizes the drive and will allow me to transfer files from one to the other. The drive was jumpered as a Master. It is the only drive connected to the controller at this time. I just can not seem to get Windows installed on this new drive. I have the original CD, it has an OEM serial on it. Please help!

I'm not quite sure about how legal this is, I don't think you are allowed under the license to have XP installed on more than one hard drive, or are back ups allowed? If it is illegal then we here at PCMech are not allowed to help you.

Sounds like you need Norton Ghost- this does what you are trying to do. On the other hand you have the CD and key so if the current HD goes south all I'd do to prepare is set up more than one partition on the second HD, place the backed up work on the second partition and then in the case you need to use the HD in a new PC and install windows - you just install it on the unused blank partition saved just for this... installing XP on two hard drives is against the EULA.....
