Question
Yes, I have a system with 98SE and I wanted to upgrade XP without losing any of my data. I was going to get a new HD because my other is almost full I was wondering if there is way to just get rid of the 98SE version that is on there and still have all my data. If you know anyway I could do this or anything if I could just upgrade without doing anything. I appreciate your help.

Make sure you BACKUP all your old data before attempting upgrades, just because the recommendations state that something is upgradeable doesnt mean that you should risk your data
XP can upgrade your Windows 98 OS: check out upgrade paths here: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;292607 Before upgrading, I'd recommend running the compatibility advisor here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/h...g/advisor.mspx and checking if your system is compatible. When you do get around to upgrading, start your Windows 98, and then insert your XP CD and select upgrade. |

Yes, you can do an upgrade from 98SE to XP. However, it seems to be a better idea to do a fresh install of XP instead of trying to upgrade from one OS to another.
If you are going to get a new drive, then it is not too hard to do. I would get the new drive and install it as the master on the primary IDE channel, removing the drive with Windows 98 and your data from the computer entirely. Since this new drive would be empty, you would need to install XP on it by booting from the XP install CD. Once you have XP set up, put the old drive with your data and Windows 98 back in the computer, installing it as a slave drive (so the computer won't try to boot from it). Then you can simply transfer all of your data from that drive to the new drive with Windows XP on it. Once you are done with that, you can format the old drive that has Windows 98 on it and use that for future storage. It would also be a good idea to back up your data to somewhere else, like CD, just to be extra safe. |

Might be a good idea to make sure Anti-virus programs are running and check all incoming data from the old system for viruses before installing it in the new system...
No sense in installing infected data to the new OS. Just my two cents. -Kev
